Yi Un-ryong, the 7th commander-in-chief of the Tongjeyeong Naval Station, built this shrine in 1606 in the 39th year of the Joseon Dynasty's King Seonjo, in order to commemorate the meritorious achievements of Admiral Yi Sunsin.
The shrine housing the spirit tablet of Admiral Yi is reached through five gates, Naesammun, Jungmun, the Oesammun Gates, the Jeongmun (front) Gate, and the Hongsalmun Gate. In the compound of Jungmun Gate are Dongjae and Seojae, the east and west wings, where people prepared libations and food for memorial service.
In the compound of Oesammun Gate are Sungmudang (administrative office) and Gyeongchungjae (lecture hall).
To the right and left of Oesammun Gate are six monument pavilions including the Pavilion of the Chungnyeol Shrine Monument inscribing Admiral Yi's patriotic service.
Outside the gate are Ganghallu Pavilion which was restored in 1988 and the exhibition hall.
