Gyeongsangnam-do Monument
In 1599, the year after Admiral Yi Sun-sin was killed in battle, residents and naval personnel of the Tongyeong area built this thatched shrine to house his spirit tablet and hold sacrificial rites in order to impart his meritorious service to future generations.
The shrine was rebuilt with a tiled roof in 1877 by Yi Gyu-seok, the 198th commander-in-chief of this naval station and Admiral Yi's tenth generation descendant who named it Changnyangmyo.
Hosangjae was also built at the time for the education of regional youth.
The shrine was restored again when overall renovation was carried out in 1974.
