Gyeongsangnam-do Monument
During the Korean War, the UN Command POW camp on Geojedo Island near Tongyeong held North Korean and Chinese prisoners.
It was overcrowded, and additional camps were established in 1952 on Chubongdo and Yonghodo islands, part of the Hansan-myeon District of Tongyeong, to hold the most vicious prisoners.
The camp on Chubongdo once accommodated some 10,000 POWs. What remains of it today are building ruins, a US Forces Headquarters building site, and stone walls.
Yonghodo held some 8,000 prisoners and still has barracks, water tanks, and the like.
